Upcoming tournaments
If you haven’t heard we’re running our third PDGA event for the year – The Drizzler – on the 13th and 14th of July. If you’re worried about the name, don’t worry I’m sure we’ve got some perfect Canberra winter weather coming up. If you want to get involved and register you can do so by following this link.
Put these in your note book:
- Australian Disc Golf Day will be the 21st of September
- Spring Sling will be 19th of October
Weston Park
I want to thank all volunteers who assisted removing the old baskets at Weston Park over the summer and helped install the new RAD baskets. We now have 28 fabulous baskets that are collard and sleeved throughout the white and gold layout. This work was critical to ensure we had flexibility to undertake future course within Weston Park that could allow us to have multiple pin placements.
The Sizzler 2024 was one of the largest disc golfing events we’ve seen in the ACT with 33 professional players and 114 amateurs playing across 14 divisions. The event was personified by the efforts of many local members and volunteers who put in hours of work before and during the event to ensure it ran as smoothly as possible.
Eddison Park
Since finishing the works at Weston Park, we’ve moved our attention to the beloved Eddison Park. With a wet summer we saw many trees sadly fall down around the park and some are still present today. While I have been busy logging tickets to have these cleaned up around the park, the way work is prioritised through “Fix my street” is a numbers and risk assessment scenario. I would encourage all members of the community to log fix my street and log tickets for the remaining fallen trees in the hopes these activities can be prioritised.
We are also aware of some of the damage caused by the mowers on tee pads and tee signs. The committee are working through with government contacts to repair the damage.
Lastly, we have been lucky enough to secure the same RAD baskets that are already installed on the front 9 holes of Eddison Park to replace the older handmade red baskets. We’ll be looking to install these new baskets in the same locations, but with the future possibility of B pin placements, like we have at Weston Park.
Athllon Park
Work to get a complete White layout mapped and installed and a south Red layout at Tuggeranong has stalled for the time being. It’s still on the committee’s radar, but will likely be pushed back to September – December 2024 due to other club priorities.
A new course at Gungahlin
People have been asking what will happen to the old baskets that we removed from Weston Park? We’ve been able to identify some land in Gungahlin, which we are working through with local government to seek approval to install a new course on the north side of Canberra. At this stage planning is only in the initial stages, but when more information becomes available, we’ll pass this onto our members.
School course collaborations
In addition to the new Tuggeranong course, we’ve also been lucky enough to have 2 schools come onboard and install disc golf courses. Alfred Deakin High School & Gold Creek School, both have beginner friendly courses available to use (outside school hours) to the general public. Some members of the club have already enjoyed playing glow disc golf at Gold Creek in the glow course rotation.
If you are looking for a new short course challenge, check out both these courses.
Club days
In the last updated I had indicated we’d be trialling running both Weston White and Gold simultaneously to allow members of all skill levels to participate. For the most part this has been successfully, although I have heard loud and clear the feedback on the sequencing of starting holes and how this has impacted peoples club day experience.
Firstly, sorry to anyone who has been impacted or felt their club day experience was sub optimal. Secondly the committee will be making some changes to how this operates for future club days at Weston, and we’ll let everyone know in the future.
We are just 1 round away from completing the first season of our club days for 2024, which means it’s a great time to checkout the club day leaderboard to see if you are in the running to win your grade.
We also have the second season schedule posted on the club website. One very important note is the starting date of season 2 will commence on the 20th of July, because of a date clash with The Drizzler. We will then have a second league day a week later on the 27th to get back onto the regular 2 week cycle until the end of the year.
